Importance of Sacrifices & the Nature of Holiness/Determination of Guilt, under the Law
Verse Observations:
God not delighting in sacrifices – Ps 51:16-17
Why do sacrifices have such an effect on God? Isn't a righteous life better than a silly ritual? (Gn 8:21)
human sacrifice (Discovery Channel, Prince of Persia)
What’s the point of giving burnt up offerings? Isn’t it better to spend your resources for the help of others?
Why are there 3 ways of making something clean -- by having it be touched by something clean and holy (Is 6:7), or by sacrifice, or by washing? And what kinds of sins would require what kind of atonement?
What’s the difference between a sin offering and a guilt offering? (Lv 4:3, 5:15) Why is a guilt offering required for the leper’s cleansing, as if he had sinned by becoming sick? (Lv 14:12)
Why should the people become guilty because of the priest? (Lv 4:3)
Why did David have to build a new altar at a specific location and offer sacrifices in order to stop the plague? (II Sm 24:16-18, 25)
What’s up with God’s policy of transfer of holiness/sinfulness by physical contact? How can the spiritual be affected by what is physical? (Nm 19:14-16, Lv 11:24-25, 32-38, 15:4-12,20-24, Mt 15:10-20 or Mk 7:14-23)
Why were the censers considered holy, if they had offered fire in sin? (Nm 16:38)
Just as sacrifices have never really taken away sin, nor can I see how these cleansing rituals really purify a person. These are merely physical things. Death is an intangible. One cannot clean the other. (Nm 19; just one example) So then how can a holy God live among them?
Shouldn’t the person who made the anointing oil that sanctified everything in the tabernacle and its courts be able to touch and handle everything in the tabernacle, and the court of the tabernacle? But this was not allowed. Only Aaron the high priest was allowed to touch everything in the tabernacle, and then, only once a year. (Ex 30:22-30, 31:6-11)
If animal sacrifices cannot make one clean, why did God institute them? (Heb 10:4)
Something to do with sanitation?
Why does God suspend Mosaic cleanliness here, and shouldn’t a prophet of all people be clean? (Ezk 4:12-15)
Why did articles of metal have to be purified with fire as well? (Nm 31:23)
